Description
Fever and ague. Satirical artwork of representations of fever (central monster) and ague (creature wrapped around patient at left). Fever, a high body temperature, can be accompanied by shivering (ague). At right is a doctor writing out a prescription. This artwork, by the English caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), dates from 1788, though this version was published in London in 1792. This copy is from the German book 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).
