Description
Forest fire damage. Dead conifer tree trunks (right half of image) lying on the ground which were deliberately set on fire by firefighters. The high moisture content of the adjacent live trees (left of image) ensured that the controlled fire did not spread. The dead tree trunks were the result of a previous severe storm, or blowdown. Firefighters use local knowledge of terrain and vegetation to combat forest fires. In this case, small controlled fires were used to create a firebreak of land cleared of combustible material. Photographed in 2001 at Mount Zirkel Wilderness, Colorado, USA.
